WHIT?

This tweet appears to have come from Jim's account. At least @jimmurphymp is not a spook account so I'm hard up for an alternative explanation!

It allegedly appeared for a very short time, only to be disappeared quicker than a Chilean who was opposed to General Pinochet and Mrs Thatcher (wink wink, nod nod)! But not, of course, before some eagle-eyed follower captured it for posterity... and Munguin.

Now the way Munguin remembers it, it was Liechtenstein that bombed Pearl Harbour... or was it Pearl Harbour that bombed Liechtenstein... ? (I bet Danny is going to tell me it's "Pearl Harbor" and in any case that it was Monaco that did the bombing.)

Anyway, Jim's love of, and support for, weapons of mass destruction is quite clear here, even if he doesn't seem to know quite whom he'd use them on.

It's a very scary thought that he would ever be in charge of putting milk in the tea, never mind anything else.

    6. I find that many people coming from University seem to lack the most common of senses, I have no idea what Jim was actually studying but certainly modern history wasn't it. More to be pitied but the trouble is that he seeks high office.
Actually with him, it could be true, it may not but his previous history leaves room for belief.

    7. The don;t teach common sense at university Helena.

Even if they did, I'm not sure Jim would have benefited mush form it.

    8. Genuine or not, 'Scottish' Labour has previous. During one Scottish Affairs Select Committee session in late 2013, Ian Davidson asked a witness how quickly a proposed 'Scottish Air Force' could intercept ''... fast jets from the Soviet Union ?''. During the same session he also asked if the future of a Scottish Artillery reserve regiment was guaranteed - only to be told it had been disbanded a few months earlier ! Both statements were redacted when the revised transcript was released - although the unrevised version was still available.

    9. Exactly. The very fact that we are not sure whether it is fake or not suggests that we are quite used to this level of ignorance.

I didn't know of that example, elrick, but it's a good one. And it's not as if Old Bayonet man is even a pretty face. :)

Dugdale's tweet the other day about Scottish Steel for the bridge, after Eck had taken her ex boss to pieces over it at FMQs, was mind blowingly stupid.

    2. The address is real Anonymous, but for all that I have treated it as possibly fake.

If someone somehow has managed to hack his account and tweet on his behalf, the response to this tweet shows what we think of the man. We are quite prepared to believe that he is THIS inept. With most folk, certainly those who spent 20% of their lives in academe, we would immediately dismiss it as rubbish.

    3. I'm sure there must have been occasions.

I remember reading that when he was about to be promoted from a junior minister in the FCO and was sent for by the prime minister, he was heard to say "anything but Scotland". (He got Scotland.) That was probably the truth.

  8. Getting away from ridiculing the man, and getting back to what he's talking about (reasons to keep funding Second-Strike Nuclear Deterrents, ie. revenge nukes).

I'm unusual in Scotland in thinking that they *do* actually have a deterrence effect, one only has to look at the different treatments the USA gives to North Korea and Iraq to see that.

The question then becomes: Could we achieve the same effect without the excessive costs, and without the massive collateral damage that nukes inevitably cause, and I'm of the opinion that we could.

For example, just imagine the effect of someone landing a blue&white paintball on the president of the USA, and a bullet in podium, during his inauguration speech, and then not getting caught. Extremely targeted at the person who would actually start trouble, and no collateral damage. Because threatening him personally is probably the only way to make him think like he'd actually be on the front lines. Do the same for Russia and China. Repeat every few years.

    1. Hey Illy... Long time no see. Hope you're well!

I'm sure that mutual destruction is, indeed, a deterrent. If only Russia had WMD, then Putin would by now be running the world.

But I guess if I have a pea shooter and you only have a stick I win. If we both have pea shooters, we know that you hit me and I will hit you, and we'll both go home with sore bits.

What I can't understand is why poor, broke, hungry, starving, cold, britain has to have WMDs. And why having them, we don't actually have any control over them. They are paid for by us. They are controlled by Washington.

Why is it important that we have them, but Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain, and other big countries don't? Are they not at risk?

I listened to Israel talking about how Iran must not be allowed to develop nuclear weapons, while Israel (which would always be protected by the USA in any case) has nuclear weapons and could... and maybe some day will...wipe out Teheran.

I suspect that we treat N Korea with kid gloves becasue China wouldn't like it if we didn't. But we could also ask why someone like Qaddafi was considered a cruel dictator, and king Salman is not. Something to do with breeding I suspect. Prince Charles was hardly going to get on with Qaddafi!

Why is Britain at the top table? I know, of course, the historical answer to that. Britain went around the world commandeering countries, lands, people, assets until it had the biggest empire ever. It was a big noise in world affairs because of that. never mind that all the moeny they made out of it never touched the people who created the wealth with their toil, either in these islands or where it originated.

Britain won the second world war with a little help from maybe 30 other countries, most notably America and the Soviet Union, but so many others.

It pushed and pushed after the war, when America wanted it to divest itself of the empire, to be included in the important countries. It used a vast amount of American aid to develop an atom bomb, while poor people were still living in bombed out homes.

It got a seat on the security council representing its empire, which it does not do and never did do.

As I say, it is broke now. The infrastructure is crumbling. Even the very parliament is falling into the Thames, and yet, they still sit on the security council, allowing the wisdom of batshit mad, money grubbing spivs like the foreign secretary, Philip BVI Hammond to have a say in world affairs... or rather to nod their heads at everything the USA SoS says.

Our deterrent is not a deterrent. It is a status symbol. Without it the UK would be forced off the security council permanent membership and people like Cameron would no longer receive instructions in phone calls from the White House.

In the meantime they have a pile of expensive and dangerous stuff 20 miles from Glasgow Green. and 600+ miles from Liz in London.

And that's before we even start on the moral argument...

      :)

  9. This is obviously fake, even if he'd got his facts right a Scottish Labour MP would never come out with something so divisive.

  11. I've accepted from when I wrote the post that it could be false.

The thing is that Murphy and his team are so incredibly hapless and make such horrendous errors, and tell such massive lies, that it is difficult now to tell whether something is fake or real.
