AND THE WINNER IS...

So Gideon it is.

And by a long way too.

We asked you to pick the person you thought most likely to succeed the Eton boy, from a list of people who have expressed an interest in being leader of the Conservative party, and the next UK prime minister. And you did.

And a sorry bunch they are too, each trying to be nastier, more loathsome and hateful than the other.

And the one you think the most loathsome (and therefore most likely to appeal to the Tories) is the current finance minister Gideon "things go better with" Osborne with 59% of the vote or 120 votes.

Boris the Clown came next with 63 votes, and Mother (not) Theresa  was 3rd with 12 votes.

The rest hardly registered on the scale, although even people I'd never heard of got a vote. Seriously has anyone heard of Graham Brady? Some people might have intended to vote for Philip Hammond but just seeing his name put them to sleep, and they may still be snoring.

Interestingly there were 10 votes for "others"... I'd be fascinated to know who the others were. Feel free to let me know.

Iain Duncan -Smith, second time round maybe?

Thanks to everyone who took part. Munguin really appreciates your participation.

  1. I think Boris only pretends to be a clown. He's every bit as venal as his Tory mates but thinks an affable, harmless persona will get him the prize. But yes I voted for Gideon (not a phrase I ever thought I'd utter) because I really think he's the next PM. It will be like the last days of Caligula! Gosh I feel an article coming on.

    1. Oh good!

Actually I think that Boris is probably the cleverest of that bunch. Certainly academically he is. But of course he is venal. They just are. He wouldn't be a Tory politician if he were not.

I agree, so far Osbo is the best bet for the job...although he is an unbelievably bad bet for us.

  2. Well there's something to look forward to, not. What a distopian future, that NO vote has bequeathed.

Is the single from your, personal, collection?

    1. LOL Jim. No, although I have somewhere Dave Dee Dozy Mick and Titch and Petula doing coke jingles. And I have all 4 of hers on cd!

Yes, Let's hope we can get away before Gideon takes the chair. If not it will be soon after.

    3. I do not know Tris if you remember Petula was/is an Arch Tory, was all over Thatcher even though she lived and probably still does in France with B the panda. Well not exactly with him you understand before he get irate, but in the same country.

  3. I did not read the article being too shocked by that picture of Petula Clark who has fairly let herself go! Have you not got a better picture of her than that?

    2. She speaks highly of you too John. But as Conan says... watch out... you've done it now.

Our Pet is above criticism. Munguin is cross. He's looking up the times of the ferries as I type.

    1. I realise that it does look a bit like Miss Piggy but it's actually the London mayor... Still in a dark room with some chems and a drop or two of vintage port... who could tell the difference?

  5. I went for Boris. There's something about him makes me wonder that things couldn't possibly get any worse, whereas the thought of another history graduate as PM sends shivers up my spine.

Theresa May think she's Thatcher. More like Fran n Anna (take yer pick). She also reminds me of Rentaghost..........

IDS? No bloody chance. Remember his "beware the quiet man" speech many years ago? I've seen more charisma from Gordon Brown on a bad day. Almost as substantial as William Hague's Tank Top Cabinet.

I'll stop now, was painting my shed roof with some weird paint and didn't need the ladder after a while.............................

    1. Did you get the paint from Gideon?

Well, with respect to any of Munguin's readers who did history at uni... it's not the most difficult degree to get, and of course if your daddy has just endowed the college with enough vintage port to last till 2035, it somehow gets easier.

On the other hand Boris did Classics. And to be honest, even with a rich daddy you do have to be able to get your way around a good few Latin and Greek words to get a pass, even a 2:2.

IDS... yeah, love to see him a prime minister. They wouldn't have an immigration problem then. I suspect many countries in Eurtope would though.

But I don;t think you actually need charisma to get on in the Tories. Apart from Boris I can't think of one who has any.

  6. Just a wee thought Tris but perhaps there may be a dark horse coming up on the outside rail here, to borrow a horse racing thingy.

With all the apparent IN/OUT debate/debackle going on inside the Tory party at present who knows maybe we'll see oor wee Nige, you know ... Nigel Farage, leading the Tories in a wee while! LOL

    1. Well, there's a good few that wouldn't mind old Nigel as their leader... That would be fun, specially if Corbyn is still leader of the Labour lot.

    2. Imagine the clash of egos.....

Nigel Farage, Boris Johnson, Alex Salmond and George Galloway ALL in the same party............

Corbyn reminds me of someone's alcoholic grandad.......

  7. Alarmingly, David Cameron is what might, relatively speaking, be referred to as the 'Good Guy' here.

His alleged sympathetic contact with real human beings during his undergraduate life has forever tainted him with suspicion by Tory universe standards. Despite that he has managed to fight off wave after wave of attempted coups from within, albeit by finally agreeing to stand down for 2020.

Unfortunately for the rest of us, the three main replacement contenders pit-fighting in the wings are all only a Nazi uniform away from being stereotypical cast members from 'Allo 'allo.

    1. Beautifully put.

I see Boris as the Colonel, with the goggles and the wet celery. Theresa May is surely Herr Flick. George is definitely General Von Clinkerhoffen.

  8. England always follows where the USA leads.
Should Americans be crazy enough to elect Trump as the leader of the "free" world God knows who the neanderthal Tories might be tempted to appoint.
The idea of Trump,Putin and Farage running the world's affairs is terrifying.
Unless you are regarded as a white conservative, your days will be numbered and "if it moves, nuke it" de jure foreign policy.

    1. Trump...

The scary thing is he's in with a real chance.

I think we'd have more of a chance with Putin... Of course the Brits don;t actually take part in the running of the world's affairs, they just make the tea for the big boys.

  9. Well I voted for Georgie Porgie, he seems to be the most likely to succeed unless Boris Stabs him in the back, but then the Tories are not Labour. We shall have to see, Boris would have been the main contender but for George being in the position he is in at No 11. Perhaps though the economy will tank even further.

    1. I found Cameron's criticism of Labour a but ironic, regarding not supporting the bill that all governments must not overspend. This is the First Lord of the Treasury (PM's other formal title) who cannot control borrowing!

And the paint fumes have worn off.......

    2. They may not be Labour but the Tories have sharp knives too Helena....witness the Noble Lord Ashcroft.

Another recession might do for Gideon.

Or Mrs may might promise to flay every foreigner to within an inch of their lives... That would be bound to generate lots of empathy in the Tory masses.

    3. It is a stupid bill, becasue they won;t be able to stick to it.

It's probably an excuse to do something else dreadful, like stop pensions or something... who knows.

When they fail to achieve it, and therefore break the law, who are they going to cart off to prison? No one. They will simply change the definition of borrowing.

  10. I can see someone from Labour becoming a Tory PM.
